Mary Harney, the superbowl, clintons and the irish and sex with a dead body

Mary Harney, Irish Minster for Heatlh, goes to the Super Bowl and misses a Dail debate on Tuesday Evening about the health service that was set to include the criminally ignored issue that is Cystic Fibrosis.

Fine Gael get their knickers in a twist and jump on to the issue, faster than a rat onto the eyeball of a comatose tramp with urine stains and a smelly Brie stapled to his eyeballs. Possibly they are peeved that being in opposition they don't get asked to go anywhere nice. And so Fine Gael are left muttering from the sidelines.

Mutter they do, complaining that because she went to this game on Sunday afternoon she couldn't come to this important debate in the Dail. It got the issue into the daily’s but as so often is the case with FG, they missed the real point of their disgruntlement. The real point being as follows:

The match was on Sunday afternoon, she had the Government private jet and forgive me if I get this wrong, which I don't, but when you have your own plane; getting from Arizona to Dublin won't take 48 hours. The problem here is not that she went to the game and then couldn't make the debate, but that she went to the game and then didn't bother to go to the debate.

Rather than take a red eye back to Ireland and face up to her responsibilities she hung around and presumably got shit-faced with the large sweaty masses of drunk New York Giants fans. Harney's spokesman said that Fine Gael had only

"notified her of the debate last Friday"

. He uses this as an excuse because he chooses to disregard the amazing progression of Air Travel in, oh I don't know, the last one hundred years.

Even in 1939 she could have safely left the stadium after the game, eaten a few hotdogs, burgers and corn dogs and still made it back to Dublin in time for the debate. The ministers spokeman continued down his road of denial

" If the schedule allowed for a private trip to a sporting event, I don't think
that should be a source of criticism".

And he is right that's not where the criticism lies, I don't give a shet if Mary Harney goes home each night and smokes smack as long as she can do her job. However if she decides not to do her job because it's harder to do it than not to do it, then she is ripe for criticism and should be made to answer not why she wasn't at the
debate but rather when she wasn't bothered to be at the debate.

Clinton and Obama, both Irish- well tentatively Irish, both have claims to
the Irish vote in the States. Obama has the endorsement of the once Irish
American Royal family - the Kennedys and it has been widely reported that
his family come from Moneygall in Ireland. Hilary states her Irish
credential through interaction in the peace process and illegal immigration.
She claims that she remembers

"...a meeting that I pulled together in
Belfast, in the town hall there, bringing together for the first time
Catholics and Protestants?"

A bit unlikely to be honest as I am pretty sure when my protestant girlfriend's family met my catholic family Hilary was not there and that happened at least two years before she went to Belfast. Hilary claims that she went to Northern Ireland more often that her husband Bill, She claims to maintain a huge amount of relevance for the Irish in American. She has a past record of being liberal on illegal immigration this being probably the most important topic for Irish Americans. During the clean up after
Hurricane Katrina she asked for assurances that illegal immigrants

"get
their fair share of Hurricane Katrina relief aid without fear of being
deported."

Although since the issue of immigration started to rear it's head on the
Democatic trail both Obama and Hilary are not committing to anything. In
America Democrats are generally willing for illegal immigrants to be
allowed stay and become legal. However both Hilary and Obama are biting
their respective tongues when asked about giving driving licenses to illegals.
This is probably more motivated by how, whichever candidate gets the nod,
they wish to play that card in the actual presidential race. Should the
democratic candidate resolutely state that they are progressive with regard
to illegal immigrants rights to citizenship the Republicans would take that
rod and beat them with it. Better to say nothing now and then just do it
when in office.

And finally in London during the murder trial of the Model Sally Anne
Bowman the accused, Mark Dixie, has entered a plea of not guilty and has
attempted to clear up the small matter of his seamen on the dead body by
stating that he had come across the body and had taken advantage of the
situation by having sex with the body. The claim is made by a man who is
so obviously aware of his guilt that he feels that he must make any claim
in an attempt to cast the smallest doubt into the juries minds. It's a
sick admission and an equally sick trick to play.
