Tourism in Ireland is doing good despite recession
Tuesday, 15 April 2008

The results for the last quarter in 2007 have been released by the Central Statistics office. I have trawled through the report so you don't have to- below are the interesting facts from the report.
Number of Visitors
There were 1.756 million people visiting Ireland October - December 2007. This was up 3% from the same period in 2006, or up about 20 % since 2004.
However people heading abroad was up 13% since the same period in 2006.
Negative returns
This all leads to a negative expenditure return. And by that I mean that In the last quarter Irish people spent 1396 million abroad, while visitors spent 1024 million here.
Expenditure
If you look at the numbers of visitors that means that they, on average, spent 600 euro on their visit, while Irish people abroad spend 30% more at 820 euro per person.
Most popular source location for visits to Ireland
Great Britain is still the most significant location for Tourists coming to Ireland,
Number of Same Day Visits
98,000 visits from abroad were same day visits, in that they came and left within 24 hours.
Who spends the most time here
People from Other Areas (ie not Britain, Europe or North America) spend the most time here- with an average of 14.8 days. This is followed be people from Europe tstaying here on average 9.3 days - although this is a drop from 11.3 in the same period in 2006 - I would guess this has something to do with the Ryanair timetable - a full two weeks costs more with them. USA and Canada stay on average 9.1 days and visitors from the UK only stay 4.6 days - which is probably a result of the number of hen and stag weekends
Where do people stay - accommodation?
People from Great Britain, USA and Canada generally stay in Hotels, People from Europe stay in Rented houses or apartments and people from "other areas" tend to stay with relatives and friends.
