Death toll from Cyclone in Myanmar (Burma) reaches 10,000
Monday, 5 May 2008
The death toll for Myanmar's cyclone is being reported as high as 10,000 people. EU news have in the last hour reported that Foreign Minister Nyan Win warned the number of victims could rise yet further.
Myanmar, Union of Myanma, is an impoverished nation located in southeast Asian and is more often known as Burma. (Myanmar as a name for the country is not internationally recognised - so it is interesting that many media outlets are reporting that the cyclone is occurring in Myanmar and not Burma)
Below is a recent video broadcast on CNN showing the damage, and below that is a video report from an Australian news station that confirms that Aid is slow to get through to the devastated areas. The humanitary effort appears to be being hindered due to the Military government of Burma's refusal to accept aid from the majority of external sources.
